Sermon Study Guide
That You May Proclaim: Week Nine
Pastor Tim Walker
13 Be subject for the Lord’s sake to every human institution, whether it be to the emperor as supreme,
14 or to governors as sent by him to punish those who do evil and to praise those who do good.
15 For this is the will of God, that by doing good you should put to silence the ignorance of foolish people.
16 Live as people who are free, not using your freedom as a cover-up for evil, but living as servants of God.
17 Honor everyone. Love the brotherhood. Fear God. Honor the emperor.
1 Peter 2:13-17 ESV
1 These are the words of the letter that Jeremiah the prophet sent from Jerusalem to the surviving elders of the exiles, and to the priests, the prophets, and all the people, whom Nebuchadnezzar had taken into exile from Jerusalem to Babylon.
2 This was after King Jeconiah and the queen mother, the eunuchs, the officials of Judah and Jerusalem, the craftsmen, and the metal workers had departed from Jerusalem.
3 The letter was sent by the hand of Elasah the son of Shaphan and Gemariah the son of Hilkiah, whom Zedekiah king of Judah sent to Babylon to Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon. It said:
4 “Thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel, to all the exiles whom I have sent into exile from Jerusalem to Babylon:
5 Build houses and live in them; plant gardens and eat their produce.
6 Take wives and have sons and daughters; take wives for your sons, and give your daughters in marriage, that they may bear sons and daughters; multiply there, and do not decrease.
7 But seek the welfare of the city where I have sent you into exile, and pray to the Lord on its behalf, for in its welfare you will find your welfare.
8 For thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel: Do not let your prophets and your diviners who are among you deceive you, and do not listen to the dreams that they dream,
9 for it is a lie that they are prophesying to you in my name; I did not send them, declares the Lord.
10 “For thus says the Lord: When seventy years are completed for Babylon, I will visit you, and I will fulfill to you my promise and bring you back to this place.
11 For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope.
12 Then you will call upon me and come and pray to me, and I will hear you. 13You will seek me and find me, when you seek me with all your heart.
Jeremiah 29:1-13 ESV
5 Likewise, you who are younger, be subject to the elders. Clothe yourselves, all of you, with humility toward one another, for “God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.”
1 Peter 5:5 ESV

Can you communicate the point of this passage in a simple phrase?
As we leave on mission…
What must I do in response?
How does this truth apply to my life?
Personally?
As the church?
In my community?
What steps do I need to take to apply this?
(Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant, Time-based Goals)
To whom will I be accountable?
(reach out and ask… follow up)
The Christian life is designed to be transferred relationally and journeyed together. You need to “rope in”– brother to brother and sister to sister – on a weekly basis so that together we can draw near to God and join him in his kingdom work.
This is an exploration – commit and prepare for a long and rewarding journey.

Ministry of the Month
Juan Marcos and Raquel Jean
World Reach: Birmingham, AL
Juan Carlos and Raquel Jean serve with World Reach, Inc., a missions organization based out of Birmingham, Alabama. There are 27 families serving abroad as missionaries with World Reach. Of those families, 20 use Spanish as the language of their home. They are serving in Honduras, El Salvador, Peru, Colombia, Argentina, Romania and in the Balkan Region. For these missionaries their first culture is a Latino culture with Spanish as their first language. It is Juan and Raquel’s job to liaison between these missionaries and the home office. They help with simple jobs like translating prayer letters and ministry reports, but also through the more weighty and difficult task of translating culture and expectations. What has proven to be invaluable is participating in ministry alongside their Hispanic missionaries. Traveling to the countries where they serve, Juan and Raquel are able to understand at a deeper level what their life and ministry is like, and therefore know how to better serve them. Their goal is to offer missionary care to the Hispanic missionaries so that they are able to serve where God has called them and not feel so isolated and alone.
The other side of their ministry is Juan being heavily involved in the Mobile Bible Institute. World Reach has Bible Institutes in Honduras, Peru, and Colombia. A team of missionaries is currently working on a project to reconceptualize the classes and teaching methods. These courses are mainly for Pastors and leaders of local congregations. Each country is different, each with unique needs and contexts. The goal is to have courses that will minister to these pastors where they have the greatest need and produce men and women who walk with God and are able to address the needs of their church and community as Jesus calls us to do.
Juan Carlos and Raquel Jean are thankful for how God has used their life in missions to teach them. What they have learned has brought them to where they are today and has given them the tools they need to serve within World Reach at this time.
Prayer Requests:
- Please pray for unity and wisdom as we coordinate our seven teams in four countries.
- Pray for the Lord’s leading for travel plans as we start to make them but there is still uncertainty because of covid.
