The Cross Reference Book Club book for May/June: The Cost of Control: Why We Crave It, the Anxiety It Gives Us, and the Real Power God Promises by Sharon Hodde Miller

~Brief book overview~
The Cost of Control
God didn’t give us control. He gave us something better. We all wish we had more control. When our relationships are strained, when our bodies refuse to cooperate, when the future is uncertain, control promises security and peace. If only I were in charge, we dream. And this illusion seems more attainable than ever. Technology, science, and medicine all promise us ever-increasing mastery over our world.
The problem is, the more we seek the illusion of control, the more it betrays us. In place of certainty, it gives us anxiety. In place of predictability, it creates complexity. And in place of unity, it divides. It’s not just that we cannot control things, it’s that we break them even more when we try.
Thankfully, the answer to our craving is not simply to “let go and let God.” Instead, God has given us a better tool. In this eye-opening book, Sharon Hodde Miller helps us discover the real power God has given us in Christ—to exercise influence over ourselves and our lives.
We look forward to hearing what you learned from reading this book at our next meeting on Saturday, June 3 at 6:30 PM at the Cross Reference Library at FBC Richland (Room 301). Join the group and RSVP so that we know you’re participating. You can join the Book Club Group and RSVP in the App: Home>Connect>Groups or click here.
Come join us whether you’ve read the book or not – we welcome all discussion. We’re excited to see you!
2GO CAFE – 9:00 AM SUNDAY
Our coffee stand is open on Sunday mornings at 9:00 AM. Stop by and grab some coffee before or after the Main Session. Donations currently benefit Rehema for Kids. • Grades 4, 5, & 6 participate in the Main Session and have their own grade-level materials. If your older kiddo hasn’t gotten an FBC Kids 4-5-6 Grade binder yet, they can grab theirs from under the table at the back of the auditorium! These are for kids to keep and they can add materials to their binders each week.

You can support this ongoing project by giving through the Church App or by purchasing items off of the Putnam Ministry House registries. We have finished furnishing the bedrooms and are now completing some other items to prepare for the family coming to stay beginning in mid-June. REHEMA FOR KIDS BREAKOUT SESSION – 6/11
Please plan to attend a fantastic Breakout Session coming on June 11 at 11:00 AM for some info about a new (to us) ministry called Rehema for Kids.
Rehema for Kids rescues abused and orphaned kids in Kenya, stopping the cycle of generational poverty through education so children can reach their God-given potential. We envision a Kenya where the streets are no longer filled with abandoned children; where villages are filled with Christian disciples who live their lives with purpose and carry the light of Christ into the next generation. We will get to hear more about this ministry from Carla Picicci, co-founder of Rehema for Kids. We hope you’ll join us next week!
AMBASSADORS IN MEXICO – 6/17-24
Please pray for the AIM team as they will be having several training meetings before their trip, which takes place from June 17-24. Their final meeting date is June 11 at 11:00 AM during Breakout Session time in Room 101.

Made Alive
Better Word
Give Me Faith
I Could Sing Of Your Love Forever
Made Alive
Verse 1
I once was dead in sin alone and hopeless
A child of wrath I walked condemned in darkness
But Your mercy brought new life
And in Your love and kindness
Raised me up with Christ and made me righteous
Chorus
You have bought me back with the riches of
Your amazing grace and relentless love
I’m made alive forever with You life forever
By Your grace I’m saved
(By Your grace I’m saved)
Verse 2
Lord You are the light that broke the darkness
You satisfy my soul when I am heartless
If ever I forget my true identity
Show me who I am and help me to believe
Bridge
My sin has been erased
I’ll never be the same
Better Word
Verse 1
What can wash away the guilty stain
After all the wrong I’ve done
I’ve already tried a thousand ways
But it’s never been enough
What could be enough
Chorus
Nothing but the blood
A better word was spoken
Oh I know it was
Nothing but the blood
Every curse was broken
Oh I know it was
Tag
Nothing but the blood
Nothing but the blood
Verse 2
And when I’m reminded of my shame
To the fountain I will run
Every failure covered now in grace
For the lamb has overcome
What can overcome
Bridge
On that cross hallelujah
I left my shame where the nails were
Jesus Christ O Lamb of God
Be lifted higher forever
Give Me Faith
Verse 1
I need You to soften my heart
And break me apart
I need You to open my eyes
To see that You’re shaping my life
Pre-Chorus
All I am
I surrender
Chorus
Give me faith to trust what You say
That You’re good and Your love is great
I’m broken inside I give You my life
Verse 2
I need You to soften my heart
And break me apart
I need You to pierce through the dark
And cleanse every part of me
Bridge
‘Cause I may be weak
But Your Spirit’s strong in me
My flesh may fail
My God You never will
I Could Sing Of Your Love Forever
Verse 1
Over the mountains and the sea
Your river runs with love for me
And I will open up my heart
And let the Healer set me free
I’m happy to be in the truth
And I will daily lift my hands
For I will always sing
Of when Your love came down yeah
Chorus
I could sing of Your love forever
I could sing of Your love forever
I could sing of Your love forever
I could sing of Your love forever
Bridge
Oh I feel like dancing
It’s foolishness I know
But when the world has seen the light
They will dance with joy like we’re dancing now
