Sermon Study Guide
All Eyes On… Seeing and Being an Example
Pastor Brad Nelson
11assuming that I will somehow reach the resurrection from among the dead.
12Not that I have already reached the goal or am already perfect, but I make every effort to take hold of it because I also have been taken hold of by Christ Jesus.
13Brothers and sisters, I do not consider myself to have taken hold of it. But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and reaching forward to what is ahead,
14I pursue as my goal the prize promised by God’s heavenly call in Christ Jesus.
15Therefore, let all of us who are mature think this way. And if you think differently about anything, God will reveal this also to you.
16In any case, we should live up to whatever truth we have attained.
17Join in imitating me, brothers and sisters, and pay careful attention to those who live according to the example you have in us.
18For I have often told you, and now say again with tears, that many live as enemies of the cross of Christ.
19Their end is destruction; their god is their stomach; their glory is in their shame; and they are focused on earthly things.
20Our citizenship is in heaven, and we eagerly wait for a Savior from there, the Lord Jesus Christ.
Philippians 3:10-20 CSB
4He comforts us in all our affliction, so that we may be able to comfort those who are in any kind of affliction, through the comfort we ourselves receive from God.
5For just as the sufferings of Christ overflow to us, so also through Christ our comfort overflows.
6If we are afflicted, it is for your comfort and salvation. If we are comforted, it is for your comfort, which produces in you patient endurance of the same sufferings that we suffer.
7And our hope for you is firm, because we know that as you share in the sufferings, so you will also share in the comfort.
2 Corinthians 1:3-7 CSB
As we gather…
What does the passage say?
Key words/phrases?
Major theological terms?
Commands?
Promises?
Difficult words/phrases?
What does the passage mean?
Context? (never interpret less than a paragraph)
How would the original hearers receive this?
Key word definitions?
Parallel Biblical teachings?
Can you communicate the point of this passage in a simple phrase?
As we go…
In response…
What do I need to leave behind?
In my sphere, who are my examples, imitating Christ?
Do I think I am a good example, imitating Christ? (on a scale of 0-10)
Who do I need to cheer on (kaleo) in their race?
Who do I need to come alongside (parakaleo) in their race?
Who do I allow in my life to come alongside me as I pursue the prize and imitate Christ?
